DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage Ludwig "Combo" series 4-piece drumset that recently came into our shop on trade. Attempting to offer a less-expensive options for their customers, Ludwig manufactured these drums in the 70s and 80s using single heads on all drums, simple wrapped finishes, and plastic lugs. Over time, the plastic lugs proved to be fragile and unreliable, and many cracked or broke. The good news is that the hole spacing for the lugs (1.75") is very common, so there are a large variety of metal replacements available.
This particular kit features 4-ply shells, coated interiors, and a white wrapped finish. Sizes are 14x22 bass drum, 16x16 floor tom, 9x13 and 8x12 mounted toms (all sizes are depth x diameter in inches). As is typical, many of the plastic lugs are cracked, broken, completely missing, or have been replaced by a variety of other metal lugs. The previous owner was not particular about the aesthetics of the lugs, and you can see in our photos that many different brands/styles have been installed over the years. Fortunately, he always used correctly sized replacements, so NO additional holes were ever drilled in the shells.
The batter side bass drum hoop is original, as is the batter side bass drum head. The front bass drum hoop and the Combo series "S Clips" (used to hold the hoop in place even though the bass drum had no audience-side head) are all missing. All of the plastic lugs for the audience side head are also missing. Note that the adhesive "badge" (not metal, just adhesive decal) on the floor tom has come un-stuck and is curling up on one side. Note also that the floor tom legs are mismatched and that one is missing its rubber foot. It appears as though two of the floor tom legs are original, and one is a replacement. Bearing edges and interiors on all drums are all in very good condition with only one small area on the bottom of the 13-inch tom showing a notable ding (see closeup photo with arrow). Wrapped finishes are in good shape with tight seams, but expect age-appropriate scuffs, scratches, dust, and slight discoloration. All of the metal hardware (tom mounting bracket on bass drum, double-tom arm, spur mounts and spurs, floor tom leg brackets) appear to be original and are all in good condition.
All in all, this unusual piece of Ludwig history is going to need a little attention to get fully up-and-running. But with a little TLC, some replacement lugs, and a fresh set of heads, this'd be a really fun kit to restore and play! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or to request additional photos.
